Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head, Archives, Library & Collections the Cataloguer will be mainly responsible for the creation of accurate description and cataloguing of archival and other museum materials in accordance with current standards. Key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Creates catalogue records of museum’s physical and digital collections
  • Produces descriptions of archival materials using RAD (Rules for Archival Description) standards
  • Reviews records and performs conversion of non-automated records into automated records such as MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloguing)
  • Maintains bibliographic records in the integrated ALM (Archival, Library and Museum) systems
  • Assists with museum’s efforts to improve information discovery through new services and technologies
  • Assists with collection quality control
  • Keeps statistics and generates progress reports
  • Other related duties as assigned


Qualifications

Requirements for this position are as follows:

Skills and Knowledge – Required

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in museum, archival or library studies and 1 – 3 years’ experience working as cataloguer or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in archival description, museum and/or library cataloguing
  • Experience in applying RAD and/or AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules), MARC and LC (Library of Congress)
  • Experience using automated databases in a museum, archives or library environment
  • Knowledge about the general principles and practices in the field of museum, archives, library and/or information studies
  • Knowledge of systems and standards used for cataloguing museum, archival and/or library material (such as RAD, MARC, AACR2 and LC); AMICUS and Z39.50 protocol
  • Able to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written


Skills and Knowledge – Desired

  • Understanding of nomenclature for Museum Cataloguing (NMC)
  • Knowledge of integrated Archival, Library and Museum collection management systems
  • Knowledge of HTML and XML
  • Knowledge of copyright standards for library, archival and museum materials
  • Ability to create appropriate procedure, technical and training documentation/materials for applications and services
  • Ability to handle properly fragile and rare archival materials
  • Work experience in a museum
  • Education or experience in human rights

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Work is in an office environment
  • Occasional physical effort lifting boxes and pulling carts
