OCLC Library Technical Services (LTS) provides cataloging and finishing services, whether in the form of finite projects, or of long-term ongoing provision of service for the majority of the library's acquisitions, purchased or donated. Using the breadth and depth of resources available in WorldCat, LTS custom edits records to each library's specifications. Where no record is available, OCLC LTS produces high-quality original cataloguing of library materials, in many languages and all formats.

Our core service is the original and copy cataloguing, plus physical processing, of library materials in many languages and virtually all formats. Other services we have provided include retrospective conversion, indexing, and onsite consulting as well as custom programming for machine-matching projects.  We are currently seeking a Cataloguer I at our Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada office.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the LTS Manager, the Cataloguer I performs copy and original cataloguing, according to customer specifications, on all types and formats of library materials. As a component of OCLC's core business, Library Technical Services uses WorldCat, the OCLC Online Union Catalog and other OCLC systems as needed to offer cataloguing and other technical services processing services traditionally performed by technical services staff in libraries.

  • Catalogues books and non-book titles that require original cataloguing. May develop expertise in original cataloguing of one or more non-book formats or non-English language materials. Original cataloguing includes descriptive cataloging according to AACR2 applying LCRIs, assignment of subject headings (usually LCSH), assignment of a call number (usually LC) and assignment of MARC tags and other coding as required by OCLC standards and entry into WorldCat. Cataloguing independence is expected by the end of the first year in the position.
  • Catalogues library materials that require copy cataloguing in all formats. Independence on all copy cataloging, including assigning call numbers and subject headings, is expected within the first six months of entry into the position.
  • Continually monitors quality of work to ensure a high level of quality on all project work.
  • Meets or exceeds all production goals set by contract deadlines and/or by supervisor.
  • Fosters a spirit of teamwork in support of OCLC policies and project goals.
  • Masters all reference tools, both electronic and print, needed to provide quality cataloguing service for libraries.
  • Exhibits flexibility in quickly moving from one project to another in order to support overall LTS goals.
  • Fluent in reading/writing in one or more foreign languages and English.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • An MLS degree from an accredited library school and/or a Library Technician diploma
  • Theoretical knowledge of current cataloguing practices and principles and MARC formats
  • Successfully completed accredited cataloguing courses
  • Experience cataloguing various formats and media
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills are essential

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Windows and standard office applications
  • Excellent keyboarding skills
  • Experience with serials cataloguing would be an asset
