The University of Manitoba Libraries invites applications for an innovative and energetic Dentistry Librarian to provide leadership in meeting the research, instruction and patient-care needs of faculty, students, researchers and clinicians in the Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene. The successful candidate will be a creative individual who works well with other colleagues in a challenging and changing environment, and who has a commitment to customer service, information literacy and evidence-based research.

Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head, Health Sciences Libraries, the incumbent will act as the primary liaison with the Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene. The incumbent will develop and maintain an understanding of the research and teaching programs of the Faculty and School.  The incumbent will develop and co-ordinate an information literacy program for the Faculty and School and will plan and develop web-based resources to meet the learning, informatics and technology needs of these clients. Collection development in the areas of dentistry and dental hygiene, and new course/program evaluations are also required. Other duties will include: participating in the Libraries’ collection management program; participating in the education, reference, outreach services and collection development programs of the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library; participating in the planning and development of programs and systems in support of the Libraries’ strategic and operational goals; participating on appropriate Libraries and Faculty of Dentistry committees and assisting in specific projects. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting users to access materials in the Rare Book Room and in the Faculty of Medicine Archives when the Archivist is absent. Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in library and/or information studies from an ALA accredited or equivalent institution is essential. An undergraduate or graduate degree in education, informatics or instructional design will be preferred. At least two years experience in an academic, government or special library with an emphasis on health sciences and experience in the areas of reference services, information literacy and collection management would be preferred. Must have a demonstrated ability to plan, design, deliver and evaluate curriculum-based educational content. Must have an understanding of evidence-based practice and an awareness of critical appraisal techniques. Must have a demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services and demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment. High level of technical knowledge is required; database searching, the Internet and social media, and knowledge of current technology and library trends are required. Direct experience with electronic learning environments and assisting faculty incorporate technology into their teaching approaches is preferred.  Promotion and marketing skills are required. Must be confident, dynamic, highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team. Networking skills are required, must be able to build coalitions of clients and supporters. Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility.  Communication and presentations skills of a high order are required to work successfully with faculty, clinicians, students and staff in a variety of situations.   The successful candidate will have an interest in health care, be committed to the continuing development of professional knowledge, and engage in an active program of scholarship and research.

The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/health/ ) supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation.  It serves eight Winnipeg hospitals, supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs.  The Health Sciences Libraries have collections of over 229,341 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receive over 6420 current serial titles and serve a primary clientele of over 7,000 health care workers.     

The Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene is dedicated to educating students to become caring oral health professionals in a progressive learning environment, conducting oral health and related research and serving the oral health professions and society as a source of knowledge and expertise.

Salary:     Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position normally has a two-year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
