The University of Manitoba Libraries invites applications for the position of Hospital Librarian, Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head, Health Sciences Libraries, the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Hospital Librarian contributes to the management of an effective clinical information service for the HSC. The Librarian participates in the work of a highly motivated team with a commitment to client-centred services. This position provides a unique opportunity to participate in reference, liaison, education, and collection development to meet the information needs of staff and clinicians of the HSC, while participating in the academic programs and services of the University of Manitoba.

The HSC librarian participates in the provision of reference services at the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries (UMHSL) which includes mediated literature searching, client driven dissemination of information and virtual reference in addition to traditional reference roles. The incumbent designs educational opportunities and materials in support of the information literacy needs of a diverse client population.  The successful candidate will engage in an active program of promotion and marketing while networking with HSC personnel and clients of the UMHSL. The HSC Librarian is responsible for strengthening the collection in the areas of allied and consumer health for the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library and three HSC satellite libraries.  A more detailed position description is available at: http://umanitoba.ca/libraries/units/health/media/HSCLibrarian-JD.pdf

Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in library and/or information studies from an ALA accredited or equivalent institution is essential.  An undergraduate or graduate degree in biological sciences and knowledge of medical terminology will be preferred. At least two years’ experience in an academic, government or special library with an emphasis on health sciences, and experience in the areas of reference services, information literacy and collection management is preferred.

Candidates must have an understanding of evidence-based practice and an awareness of critical appraisal techniques; a demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services and demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment; a high level of technical knowledge, database searching, the Internet, and knowledge of current technology and library trends; promotion and marketing skills. Must be confident, dynamic, highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team.  Must be able to build coalitions of clients and supporters. Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility.  Communication and presentations skills of a high order are required to work successfully with faculty, students and staff in a variety of situations.   The successful candidate will have an interest in health care, be committed to the continuing development of professional knowledge, and engage in an active program of scholarship and research.

The University of Manitoba Libraries (http://www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/) consists of nine unit libraries and eleven satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at eight Winnipeg hospitals.  With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 24 million dollars and a staff of approximately 275 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers. 

The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/health/ ) supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation.  It serves eight Winnipeg hospitals, supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs.  The Health Sciences Libraries have collections of over 229,341 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receive over 6420 current serial titles and serve a primary clientele of over 7,000 health care workers.

This position normally has a two-year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
