Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science supplemented with a Bachelor of Education degree and several years related experience. An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered. Experience teaching in the K-12 system and library experience in the reference area and in the development of collections is essential. Experience working in a school library is desired. Experience with planning, coordinating, facilitating and conducting sessions, in-services, and workshops with groups and experience managing human resources, staff workload and financial resources are essential. In-depth knowledge of the Provincial curricula is essential. Strong leadership skills with the ability to maintain effective work relationships with staff and the public; the ability to work independently and as part of a team; and strong decision making and problem solving skills are essential. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.  Proficiency with information and communication technologies is desired.

Duties:

Reporting to the Coordinator of the Instructional Resources Unit, this position provides consultative and instructional services to teachers, administrators, teacher candidates and school library staff; and supervises staff in the Reference and Collections Services team.


The position coordinates the development of the Unit’s collections, ensuring that all resources meet high standards for currency, accuracy and curriculum congruence, and collaborates with Manitoba Education branches to determine new directions for collection development. The incumbent reviews and evaluates audio-visual resources and websites for inclusion in the IRU’s collections, for course writers, and for joint projects between Manitoba Education and other provincial agencies.


The position also provides leadership to staff and coordinates the activities of the reference area; the provision of reference and research services; bibliography development; and consultations with Manitoba educators and the staff of Manitoba Education. The incumbent participates on the IRU senior management team that develops and implements the Unit’s initiatives.
