Overview
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is Canada's newest national museum, with construction and inaugural exhibits slated for completion in 2012, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. An "idea museum" with a strong focus on innovation, the CMHR seeks talented people who share our passion and commitment to creating a world class museum that will enhance the public’s understanding of human rights, promote respect for others and encourage reflection and dialogue.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head, Archives, Library & Collections the Library Specialist will be responsible for participating in and coordinating of a wide range of information services including but not limited to reference, circulation, collection development, acquisitions and cataloguing published and public materials.
• Selects and maintains electronic library digital resources to support the Global Human Rights Reference Centre
• Provides specialized human rights subject reference services. Responds to daily on-site requests for information. Trains museum staff and users to effectively use electronic information resources
• Maintains other user services including circulation, shelving, Interlibrary Loan services and bibliographic services
• Recommends acquisition of electronic and print library materials, based on review of professional journals, advertisements, evaluative previews or research staff requests
• Coordinates acquisitions of all library materials including licencing for electronic resources
• Manages the library automated system and maintains local library databases
• Coordinates and maintains information cataloguing services both for electronic and print resources
• Evaluates the physical condition of library materials in all formats
• Develops and maintains the library resources web site
• Prepares reports related to library and information services, technology and media services, resources and activities
• Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications
Requirements for this position are as follows:
Skills and Knowledge – Required
• Degree or diploma in Library and/or Information Studies or equivalent education
• Degree relevant to human rights (such as political science, public administration or law)
• 2-4 years’ experience working as a librarian or information specialist
• Knowledge of modern library organization, practices and procedures, methods, ethics and professional standards
• Knowledge of bibliographical principles, cataloguing and classification rules, regulations, and online tools and resources
• Knowledge of reference source materials and skill in usage of various reference research methodologies
• In-depth Knowledge of an automated library system
• Experience in the use of various reference sources and tools
• Ability to communicate in both official languages, oral and written
Skills and Knowledge – Desired
• An ALA (American Library Association) accredited Master’s degree
• Understanding of scholarly publishing issues and trends with an interest in collection development in both print and electronic formats
• Knowledge of Dublin Core, MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging), AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules), LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), Library of Congress Classification and OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) Connexion and an integrated library, archival and/or museum systems
• Knowledge of copyright standards for library, archival and museum materials
• Education or experience in human rights
• Work experience in a museum

• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Proven ability to exercise tact and sound judgment
• Strong customer service aptitude
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
• Work is in an office environment
• Occasional physical effort lifting boxes and pulling carts
