The University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries invites applications for a Manitoba Health and Healthy Living Outreach Librarian. This position will be based part-time at the Manitoba Department of Health and Healthy Living (MHHL) and part-time at the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library, Bannatyne Campus.
Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Outreach Services Librarian/Section Head, this position coordinates library outreach services to Manitoba Health and Healthy Living Staff, fee-for-service physicians and staff of MHHL grant-funded agencies.
The incumbent will provide reference and research services, conduct training seminars, and make full use of web-based resources and supportive technologies to supply relevant knowledge based information. This position will be of interest to a creative, dynamic, and proactive librarian who will promote, market and liaise with MHHL staff to determine the most effective strategies for delivering library services. Qualifications: A Master’s degree in library and/or information studies from an ALA accredited or equivalent institution is essential. An undergraduate or graduate degree in biological sciences and knowledge of medical terminology will be preferred. At least two years’ experience in an academic, government or special library with an emphasis on health sciences, and experience in the areas of reference services, information literacy and collection management is required. Must have an understanding of evidence-based research and an awareness of critical appraisal techniques. Must have a demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services and demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment. Must be able to foster relationships and negotiate partnerships between diverse groups. High level of technical knowledge is required, database searching, the Internet, and current library trends are required. Promotion and marketing skills are required. Must be confident, dynamic, highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team. Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility. Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills are required to work successfully with faculty, students and staff in a variety of situations. Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate will have an interest in health care, be committed to the continuing development of professional knowledge, and engage in an active program of scholarship and research.
About the Libraries, the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library and the City of Winnipeg: The University of Manitoba Libraries (http://www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/) consists of nine unit libraries and eleven satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at eight Winnipeg hospitals. With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 24 million dollars and a staff of approximately 275 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers.
The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/health/ ) supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation. It serves eight Winnipeg hospitals, supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs. The Health Sciences Libraries have collections of over 229,341 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receive over 6420 current serial titles and serve a primary clientele of over 7,000 health care workers.

This position normally has a two-year probationary period.
Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
