The University of Manitoba Libraries invites applications for the position of Outreach Services Librarian/Section Head, Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Health Sciences Libraries of the University of Manitoba seeks an innovative, energetic and service-oriented professional to play a leadership role in a new province-wide outreach program. Outreach Services offers effective, client-centered information literacy consultations, training, orientations, literature searches, and reference and research assistance - in person and via the Internet - to Manitoba's Regional Health Authorities and Manitoba Health and Healthy Living. Outreach staff are also stationed on site at the Winnipeg offices of the Regional Health Authorities of Manitoba, Inc. (RHAM) and MHHL. Outreach Services will be responsible for the Aboriginal Health program and its service to Nunavut and the CIHR Team in Circumpolar Health Research.

Reporting to the Head of the Health Sciences Libraries, the Outreach Services Librarian/Section Head will guide a team of professional and support staff who identify and respond to the diverse information needs of clinical practitioners, health care administrators, community workers, researchers, and students across a wide geographical area. The Outreach Services Librarian/Section Head will be an experienced and dynamic academic librarian, capable of coordinating the development, planning, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of library services. With a strong interest in information technology, social media, information literacy, and distance education, the Head will be a highly motivated leader and communicator who can thrive in an environment of change and challenge.  A more detailed position description is available at: http://umanitoba.ca/libraries/units/health/media/OutreachLibrarian-JD.pdf

Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in library and/or information studies from an ALA accredited or equivalent institution is essential.  An undergraduate or graduate degree in biological sciences or education, or instructional design will be preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology would be preferred. At least two years’ experience in an academic, government or special library with an emphasis on health sciences, and experience in the areas of reference services, information literacy and collection management is preferred.  At least two years experience in management will be preferred.  Must have an understanding of evidence-based research and an awareness of critical appraisal techniques. Must have a demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services and demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment. Must be able to foster relationships and negotiate partnerships between diverse groups.

Knowledge of and experience with information technology, database searching, the Internet, and current library trends are required.   Experience with marketing is an asset. Must be dynamic, highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team.  Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility.  Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills are required to work successfully with faculty, students and staff in a variety of situations. Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate will have an interest in health care, be committed to the continuing development of professional knowledge, and engage in an active program of scholarship and research.

The University of Manitoba Libraries (http://www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/) consists of nine unit libraries and eleven satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at eight Winnipeg hospitals.  With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 24 million dollars and a staff of approximately 275 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers.  

The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/health/ ) supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation.  It serves eight Winnipeg hospitals, supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs.  The Health Sciences Libraries have collections of over 229,341 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receive over 6,420 current serial titles and serve a primary clientele of over 7,000 health care workers.

Salary:     Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position normally has a two-year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
