Empowered responses: Handling difficult
interactions and inappropriate comments
Working with people means navigating a wide range of behaviours, emotions, and lived experiences. In public-facing
or collaborative environments, employees may encounter individuals who are overwhelmed, frustrated, or
experiencing heightened emotions. Additionally, they may experience aggressive behaviour, inappropriate or
offensive comments, or individuals experiencing a mental health crisis or the effects of substance use.
This session takes a trauma-informed approach to responding to challenging situations, emphasizing safety, empathy,
and self-regulation. Participants will learn strategies to de-escalate difficult interactions, address inappropriate
behaviour with clarity and respect, and support colleagues and clients during and after an incident. Using scenarios
tailored to your specific work environment, the session encourages reflection, skill-building, and responses that are
relevant, compassionate, and effective.
