Truth and Reconciliation

Those who attended the MLA-SLA Joint Conference two weeks ago had the honour of listening to The Honourable Murray Sinclair give the opening keynote, titled Truth is Hard. Reconciliation is Harder. He recommended specific steps we can all take in our journey of reconciliation, and given the recent discovery of unmarked graves in the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in B.C. and the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan, MLA wanted to share his first recommendation: read the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, or at the very least, the Summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. 2021 MLA Scholarships – Call for Submissions

Are you currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in library and information sciences?  Have you heard about the Manitoba Library Association scholarships?  Consider applying today! 

The Manitoba Library Association administers 2 scholarships on an annual basis. 

Scholarships:

Jean Thorunn Law Scholarship – Application Deadline: April 15, 2021

Available to eligible applicants who have worked in a Manitoba library and who choose to further their career by pursuing a graduate program in library and information science. Applicants must have been engaged in recent library work in Manitoba for twelve months.

John Edwin Bissett Scholarship – Application Deadline: April 15, 2021

Available to eligible undergraduates of the University of Manitoba who are pursuing a graduate program in library and information science. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba.

Call for Nominations – Manitoba Library Association Board Positions

Being a member of the MLA Board provides excellent opportunities to:

  • meet and network with others in the community,
  • gain valuable skills,
  • build your professional portfolio, and
  • contribute to your profession.

The Manitoba Library Association welcomes nominations for the following positions on the Board:

Vice President

Membership Director

Communications Director

Library Technicians Division Chair

Trustees Division Chair 

Position descriptions are available online.  Additional information on position responsibilities, expectations or benefits of serving on the Board is available by emailing president@mla.mb.ca.

Nomination Process:

You may nominate someone who is willing to stand as a candidate for an above position, or you may nominate yourself. Please send an email to president@mla.mb.ca and include:

  • Name of nominee
  • Contact information of nominee

Nominations close March 1, 2021.

Election Process:

Elections will take place at the Association’s Annual General Meeting on March 3, 2021.  The roster of nominees will be presented to members and there will be a call for additional nominations from those present at the meeting.  Voting will take place after which the Association’s members will accept the slate of new Board members.
