If your resources are more limited, how do you calculate and communicate the library’s value in a way that rings true to your stakeholders? What can you learn from your calculations? This session will explore the process of calculating a market value return on investment at your library and communicating it to your target audience.

Description: Due to the success of our first TALK AND TOUR, we will be holding a second event that combines the chance to tour a new (or new to you!) library space and engage in lively discussion with library colleagues. Our June 2019 event will be held at the brand new Transcona Library on Monday, June 17th at 6 pm. The Transcona Library reopened in April 2019 and has some exciting features, including an open and accessible floor plan, a family literacy playground in the Children’s area, a living green wall, and an outdoor reading area and garden. Tour the beautiful space, and then follow that up with light refreshments and discussion time with colleagues.

MLA Webinar – A Flux Capacitor is not a Planning Tool: How to Plan for Technology

Description: Although it is entirely possible for things to get better with age, this does not apply to the computers and other technology in your library. Library budgets are often very tight and we all try to squeeze “just one more year” out of our tech, hoping that we can make those limited dollars go as far as possible. However, this does nothing for the patrons using those aging computer or library staff who have to troubleshoot them as they fail. Creating a technology plan builds a schedule where you can plan the replacement of computers and other technology in your library before they fail and cause problems and panic. Having a replacement schedule will also give you a roadmap of how to spend your budget dollars. This session will give you a guideline and tips on how to create a technology plan of your own.

Library and Archives Canada Public Consultation on Voilà, the National Union Catalogue

As part of its strategic priorities, Library and Archives Canada supports a strong and connected Canadian library community through enhanced collaboration and services to support in selecting and describing new Canadian works for their collections. We will be hosting two in-person events in Manitoba in May 2019 to engage with your library community and hear your feedback so that we can better develop a vision, policy, and strategy for Voilà, Canada’s National Union Catalogue.

On May 13th, 2019, we will be in Brandon at Brandon Public Library at 1:00 pm
On May 14th, 2019, we will be in Winnipeg at the Millennium Library at 10:30 am

We will be sharing some updates about LAC and engaging with the Canadian library community to develop the future of Voilà and achieve a representative National Union Catalogue by maximizing participation of Canadian libraries.

We invite you to attend one of these meetings to help us better understand your needs, challenges, and aspirations regarding the National Union Catalogue.

February 4th Workshop with Bruce Fiske – Hosted by the Library Technicians Division

This workshop is targeted at library staff with public service roles. Libraries are spaces for everyone from all walks of life, and workers are often in front lines of service, in person and digitally. Libraries strive to provide safe spaces for their workers and the communities they serve. This workshop will discuss the topic of working through challenging patron behavior through training and planning for safe work practices in person and online for library professionals.

Speakers:

Bruce Fiske:

Bruce graduated from the University of Manitoba Social Work program with a Master of Social
Work in 2011 and Bachelor of Recreation Studies in 1993. He has been a Social Worker at Winnipeg
Public Libraries since June 2012. His background most of his life has been in the area of recreation with
aging populations along with experience in crisis intervention, mental health, and youth recreation. He
enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, their numerous pursuits and family activities.

Bruce Fiske (MSW), Social Worker at WPL, will discuss the topic of working through challenging customer/client behavior through training and planning for safe work practices. Topics covered will include identifying concerns in the workplace, self-calming and control techniques, the concept of de-escalation, assessment, and tactics for common scenarios and planning and practice for the future.

Kyle Feenstra:

Kyle is the Coordinator for Learning and; Instruction Support at University of Manitoba Libraries. He has B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from the University of Winnipeg and an MLIS from the University of Western Ontario. His current research is focused on critical pedagogy, learner autonomy, and the place of student voice in academic libraries.

During the workshop, Kyle will discuss approaches taken by University of Manitoba Libraries to manage potential conflict in online reference interactions. The workshop will focus on strategies to increase staff and patron safety in situations where patrons are exhibiting significant levels of stress or agitation, including potential crisis situations.

Location: Neil John Maclean Library Room 385

Enter the main Lobby of the U of M 744 Bannatyne Ave campus on the first floor. If entering from McDermot, you will already be inside the lobby. If entering from the underground parking lot on Sherbrook, proceed through the building towards the Bannatyne Campus main building. The lobby is directly after the entrance.

From the lobby, either take the elevator to level “2B” or walk up the flight of stairs to the next Brodie Building floor. (It’s the first floor that has a walkway hanging over the lobby.) The Neil John Maclean Library on the right.

Once inside the library, go directly up the spiral staircase, or take the elevator to the 3rd floor. It will be on the far left wall if you were taking the stairs, or to your right if you took the elevator. The room has a glass wall and has “385” written on the glass.
