Call for Proposals – 50th Annual Workshop on Instruction in Library Use (WILU)

The 2023 Workshop for Instruction in Library Use (WILU) marks the 50th conference devoted to teaching and learning in libraries.

Presenters and attendees from Canada and beyond meet to discuss information literacy as it continuously evolves in various library settings.

The Program Committee invites proposals for the 50th edition of WILU hosted at McGill University located in Montreal, Québec, Canada from May 16 to 19, 2023.

Proposal requirements

Each proposal must contain:

  1. Name and e-mail address of primary contact
  2. Names and affiliations of other presenters
  3. Title and abstract (for the program should your proposal be accepted, up to 100 words)
  4. Description
    1. Presentation – up to 350 words
    2. Workshop – up to 500 words (include learning outcomes and active learning strategies)
    3. Panel discussion – up to 350 words

Proposals will be accepted until Monday, December 5, 2022 at midnight. Please note that presentations can be in English or in French.

Webinar – International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2022

The Manitoba Accessibility Office and Manitoba Employment Equity Practitioners Association are pleased to be co-hosting a free virtual webinar “IDPD 2022:  United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” on Thursday, December 1, 2022, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, via Zoom Platform.

Prior to the IDPD Webinar, you will receive an email with the Zoom Access Information in order to participate.

The webinar will begin with an overview of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provided by Steven Estey, who is a leading Canadian expert on the Convention.  Mr. Estey has advanced disability rights for over three decades through his work with disability and human rights organizations, government, and United Nations agencies.

Mr. Estey’s overview will set the stage for a panel discussion about the significance of the Convention to Manitoba, with a focus on areas of concern to our panelists:

  • Diane Driedger
  • Justine Kiwanuka
  • Mary Lavigne
  • Carrie Pacey

Topics will include accessibility, employment, healthcare, and equal representation before the law.

The panelists’ diverse experience includes living with visible and invisible disabilities, alongside their unique perspectives as women of settler, immigrant, Métis and Indigenous roots.

Call for Expressions of Interest to represent CFLA-FCAB on the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing

The CFLA-FCAB Cataloguing and Metadata Standards Committee (CMSC) is seeking expressions of interest in representing CFLA-FCAB on the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing (CCC). One CFLA-FCAB position is currently open and CMSC would like to have someone in place for September 1, 2022. The appointment will be for a three-year term ending August 31, 2025.

Survey – Manitoba Libraries and Serving Those Experiencing Homelessness

In January 2022 Manitoba Library Association was invited by Manitoba Department of Families to review the discussion paper Developing Manitoba’s Homelessness Strategy and attend a strategy call. MLA provided feedback to the Department of Families on the role that libraries play as community hubs for connecting all users, including users experiencing homelessness, to information resources that they require to support their cultural, social, and economic well being. The Department of Families has since developed the What We Heard report from their consultations.

Free Webinar Replay: Libraries and COVID-19: Managing Strategies and Stress

As communities across the globe work to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, the library’s role as an information resource and community partner is more crucial than ever—whether or not the physical library is closed. In this special episode of AL Live, we’ll be speaking with librarians from communities that have been on the front lines of this crisis. They’ll discuss lessons learned during the initial response and how they are continuing to provide important services as public facilities close and commerce slows. We’ll also speak with mindfulness and mental health experts about how library workers can manage stress and anxiety during this ever-evolving situation and how they can disseminate these strategies to their patrons.

There are special considerations when planning and facilitating a virtual meeting.

In this webinar, we will cover the best practices for planning and facilitating a virtual meeting to compensate for the lack of body language and facial cues to ensure everyone is an active participant. We’ll provide an overview of the common elements of an AGM and what should be done before and during the meeting, with an emphasis on how to plan for a virtual AGM.
